According to John Collins, Kilkenny’s Chief Fire Officer and CFOA Conference Secretary 2020, this will be the third occasion that the event will be hosted in the county, following conferences in 1967 and 1981.
He explained the theme of this year’s conference as follows: “If someone wants to say or ask something, you can say ‘fire away’ to show that you’re ready for them to speak, thereby, encouraging debate and discussion with the speakers and exhibitors.” He said that ‘Fire Away’ also touches on fire safety/prevention talks and trade equipment and on a fire incident in UK, which will be addressed by one of this year’s conference speakers.
“The conference will afford delegates, national and international speakers, manufacturers and trade representatives an opportunity to engage with each other by asking questions and debating on current and future technology. It will also assist the fire and rescue services in serving our communities, looking at strategies for dealing with current issues, preparation of future issues and development of leadership in fire service delivery.”
Kilkenny’s fire chief also noted that the Fire Technology Exhibition will be an opportunity for manufacturers and trade representatives to outline current and future trends in fire service equipment, and to hear about the requirements of the fire service.
He acknowledged the support of the Chief Executive of Kilkenny County Council, Colette Byrne, and also acknowledged the “huge commitment of Kilkenny Fire and Rescue Service staff” in assisting the CFOA to host this year’s conference.
