Dublin Fire Brigade firefighter and paramedic Tom Larkin, based in the North Strand Station, is the winner of the Lord Mayor’s Award for March. Tom was instrumental in fast tracking Covid-19 tests for DFB crew members at the Rotunda Hospital, to enable them to swiftly return to work.
He was nominated for the award in the ‘Emergency Services Staff’ category by his sister Suzanne and brother Francis. “As a family we are super proud of Tom and he’s a role model for the future generation. Tom has worked in the emergency services 15 years and he always thinks of others and puts their needs before his own,” noted Suzanne.
“At the start of the pandemic he volunteered with DFB’s Covid Crisis Committee to see what he could do. He came up with the idea of approaching the Rotunda Hospital, and they were very happy to help out.”
Receiving a piece of specially-commissioned sculpture and a gift voucher worth €1,000, Tom said he was chuffed to win this award. “I can’t take all the credit though. My sister Suzanne who works in the Rotunda facilitated the contacts. I’ll be sharing the gift voucher with her. Maybe the Rotunda is worthy of the same award. I would like to thank the Master of the Hospital Prof Fergal Malone and his staff for facilitating DFB. I’ll probably put my award in the sitting-room, but it depends on where I’m allowed to put it!”
The Lord Mayor’s Awards, which usually take place annually, have been taking place monthly since last October to honour and thank those who have worked tirelessly on the frontline during this pandemic.
Awards to-date have been presented in the following categories: Nursing Home Staff & Volunteers (October), Transport Staff (November), Hospital Services Staff (December), Retail Staff (January), Hospital Medical Staff (February) and Emergency Services Staff (March).
Nominations for the month of May in the ‘Community Workers and Volunteers’ category can be made online www.dublincity.ie/lordmayorsaward and will be open from 1-16 May.
